From 2011 to 2021, Michigan has participated in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicaid Promoting Interoperability (PI) Program, formerly known as the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program or Meaningful Use. Although program year 2021 is the last year providers can attest for an incentive payment, appeals and audits will continue through completion. The following information will no longer be updated but is being kept available, as is, as an accessible archive. Please read the Medicaid Interoperability Program Important Dates and End of Program Reminders for more information on the end of the program.

The Medicaid PI Program provided incentives for eligible hospitals and providers to participate in Electronic Health Records and various interoperability & Meaningful Use efforts. The goal of this program was to increase provider participation in a statewide effort to make the right health data available to the right people at the right time across products and organizations in a way that can be relied upon and meaningfully used by healthcare professionals, hospitals, and patients and families. The program enhanced care coordination and patient safety, reduced paperwork and improved efficiency, facilitated electronic information sharing across providers, payers, and state lines, and enabled data sharing using state Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) and the National Health Information Network (NHIN).
