Registering for the Michigan Medicaid Promoting Interoperability Program is a two-step process:

Step 1: Federal-level Registration

EPs should already be registered with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Registration and Attestation System (RAS) as this was required during the first year of participation. Any provider updates (ex: demographic information, payee information) still need to be updated at the CMS site. https://ehrincentives.cms.gov/hitech/login.action.If you are working on behalf of an Eligible Professional, please refer to page 6 in the guide for Login instructions.

Information entered by an EP in the CMS RAS, and later transferred to one’s state registration, may only be changed at the federal level. A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is required to register. Most NPIs are associated with an employer Tax Identification Number (TIN). During federal registration in the CMS RAS, an EP may request that payment be made to a SSN rather than to an employer TIN. If such a request is made, the EP may receive an error message during state-level registration. To resolve the error, the EP must successfully link his or her SSN and NPI at the SIGMA Vendor Self Service (VSS) Site before returning to complete state-level registration.

Step 2: State-level Registration

Once registered in the CMS RAS, EPs must complete their registration with the state of Michigan, in an EHR registration module within the Community Health Automated Medicaid Processing System (CHAMPS). After completing registration in the CMS RAS, EPs will receive a letter inviting them to complete registration at the state level. This is accomplished through an EHR registration module accessed through CHAMPS. Step-by-step instructions for registering in the CHAMPS EHR module are available below: State-level Registration Guide
